Bale Mountains

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Bale Mountains National Park

Depart from Addis Ababa in the morning and drive south to Bale Mountains National Park. Upon arrival, check in at the park headquarters, then continue to the Gaysey Grasslands for a relaxed hike. Here you may spot endemic mammals like the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck. The grasslands are also a birder’s paradise with species such as the Blue-winged Goose, Spot-breasted Lapwing, Abyssinian Longclaw, Wattled Ibis, and Rouget’s Rail.

Overnight: Dinsho Campsite (3,200 m)

Day 2: Trek to Finch Habera Campsite

Walk from Dinsho deep into the National Park, keeping watch for Nyala and Bushbuck along the trail. Stop by the Habera Waterfall and enjoy expansive montane vistas. If lucky, you might glimpse the Ethiopian Wolf—a rare predator endemic to the Bale region. Trekking time: 5 hours.

Overnight: Finch Habera Campsite (3,550 m)

Day 3: Trek to Wasama

Trek through the breathtaking Mararo Valley, home to nesting Lammergeyers and Verreaux’s Eagles. Look for the Ethiopian Wolf as you climb into higher alpine terrain. The landscape is dramatic, with sweeping ridgelines, rock spires, and alpine flora. Trekking time: 8 hours.

Overnight: Wasama Campsite (3,700 m)

Day 4: Trek to Gebre Guracha

Begin the day summiting Mount Wasama (4,200 m), then descend into Worgona Valley toward Lake Gebre Gurracha—named “Black Lake” in the Oromic language. The plateau here hosts falcons, raptors, and expansive moorland ecosystems. Trekking time: 8 hours.

Overnight: Gebre Guracha Campsite (3,900 m)

Day 5: Sennati Plateau – Addis Ababa

Take a final 2-hour hike from Gebre Guracha up to the scenic Sennati Plateau to meet your vehicle. Return to Addis Ababa by road. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with cultural music and dance before your transfer to the airport or overnight stay in Addis (by request).
